    2. Why is Qtel providing a free Speed Upgrade?
    Our Broadband network is the core platform for delivering Broadband high-speed access to the Internet. We have long recognized the importance of Broadband access to the people of Qatar - for education, for e-government initiatives, for businesses and for entertainment and all the benefits that high-speed access to the Internet. The faster the connection speed then the better the surfing experience is for our customers.

    3. What do I have to do in order to get the Speed Upgrade so as to double the Internet speed for my Broadband and Mozaic TV+ Service?
    You do not have to do anything. Qtel will upgrade the Internet speed for all existing customers automatically and seamlessly. Qtel will proactively upgrade your Internet speed and also ensure that the correct Broadband Internet speed information is reflected on your billing statement.

    4. I am an existing Broadband / Mozaic TV+ customer, how will the Speed Upgrade will benefit me?
    The Upgrade will improve upload and download experiences and make surfing faster and more rewarding - at no extra cost to customers. Mozaic TV will continue to operate at the optimum speed for the service.

    5. Does the Speed Upgrade mean I will always have faster up/downloads?
    In a few instances, where customers are downloading exceptionally high quantities of data (such as movies or live video streaming) and when doing so during peak or busy periods, they may not feel the full benefits of the Upgrade. Such customers would be advised to try again at quieter periods of network activity - such as late at night. [See question 6 below.]

    Technical Questions:

    6. Is it really double the speed for existing customers?
    In practice, after the Speed Upgrade, all customers should experience double speed compared to their old package speed. However, during peak times, our international bandwidth is shared with all customers accessing the Internet at that same time. This demand on bandwidth and the need to share capacity naturally limits accessibility somewhat. Qtel has upgraded both the Access Network and International Bandwidth connectivity for Speed Upgrade.

    Here's the technical diagram;

    Broadband-Technical Diagram
    Access Network is the landline connection from customer premises (or building owner's premises) to Qtel's access network to the Qtel ISP (Internet Service Provider) network.

    It is within this portion of the access path that all Qtel existing customers' access network ports will be upgraded: 512 Kbps to up to 1 Mbps, 1 Mbps to up to 2 Mbps, 2 Mbps to up to 4 Mbps.

    Qtel's International Bandwidth to the world wide web has also been upgraded to support the initiative.

    7. What has Qtel done on the network to support Speed Upgrade?
    Qtel has upgraded its core networks for Broadband, including the MPLS (connecting DGDLC and DSLAM to ISP network), Cache (memory server), BRAS (authentication server), and Router Service (the routing device for core network).

    8. It looks like my download speed is still the same - why's this?
    Our initiative is designed to address all Broadband customers. However, there are certain circumstances that may affect a small number of customers;

    It could be that your residence is in an area where our network is under development. We are in a continuous programme of infrastructure development and our commitment is to upgrade and overhaul all Broadband and copper networks to support the needs of our customers.

    The internal wiring in your residence may need to be inspected. Qtel is not responsible for internal wiring inside buildings and where cabling is old and in need of repair then this may have a negative impact on attainable speeds. Your wiring vendor can advise (listed on the Block Wiring Certificate for your premises).

    You should note that when you access content that is not locally cached, you have to share the international bandwidth during peak usage time. Try the speed test below. [Note: While performing the Speed Test, below, please shut down or pause any downloads or streaming activity.]

    The Speed tests
    If you are in doubt about your new speed, then try the tests below, make a note of the results of your test and then call 111 and we can discuss your situation.
    1. Go to http://www.speedtest.qa/, and note the stated download and upload information in the screen.

    2. After having checked local speed, please check your international bandwidth using http://www.speedtest.net. Follow the on-screen instructions by selecting a destination download location. Again, make a note of the results and then call us on 111 if you have doubts about your speed.

      If you notice better download and upload results, compared to your old Internet speed, then Qtel has already upgraded your Broadband Internet speed.

      If you are simply browsing, downloading email or an email attachment, you will experience better download speeds most of the time.

      If you are using your Broadband for P2P or Streaming video / movie, you may have either the same experience to one you previously had or one that is better. The results will also depend upon if your access to the Internet during the peak usage time period.
